Fact Check: Is Play Octopus a scam?

What is Play Octopus? Is it a scam? How much can you earn?

If you are not familiar with the company “Play Octopus”, it is basically a company that gives drivers a free tablet to put in their car that allows them to earn money while driving for Uber and/or Lyft. Details on how this works can be found here in an earlier blog post.

A Facebook user which we will call Mr. X to hide his identity, asked if anyone has received money from Play Octopus in the time that they have been using it.

Smells like a scam right?

It is not. If Mr. X is reading this post I would say to him (and any others who are experiencing the same) — contact Play Octopus support. It is likely you have a defective tablet. Nothing is perfect and 3 years ago, this company was brand new, there are bound to be hiccups.

Here are my personal earnings from Play Octopus:

As for just how much you can earn, for me, it is about $25 a month when I drive. When I was hitting Uber and Lyft harder like a full-time driver, I was getting about $50 a month. Depending on what kind of car you drive, that can be 2 tanks of gas a month.

You are not going to get rich from Play Octopus, that is for sure. I am a part-time driver and really have not driven since March of last year. If you are a full-time driver, you will earn more than me. It is as simple as that.

Keep in mind, $50 is easily 20 UberX rides. The time saved is a bonus for me.

As for wasting time mounting it? It is a tablet that comes with a headrest holder. It takes about 30 seconds to turn on and attach to your headrest. If you are paranoid of theives like me, and end up taking it down and putting it back up everytime you drive, you are probably looking at 30 minutes of work throughout the month. Yea, the earnings are low, but it is passive income and that is what makes it awesome.
