Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue Helicopter Goes Down; At Least Two Hospitalized; Highway Closed

August 28, 2023 – Broward County, FL – Police and emergency services responded to an aircraft emergency at approximately 8:45 a.m. when a Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue helicopter went down in the area of 1201 NW 6th Ave. At least two individuals onboard were hospitalized following the incident.

Broward County School officials stated that the helicopter did not make contact with any school buildings, landing a few blocks away from a nearby school. As a result of the incident, North Dixie Highway has been closed off between Northeast Fifth Street and Northeast 10th Street. Deputies and fire rescue teams are actively working to clear the scene.

Video footage from the scene displayed a trail of smoke emanating from the helicopter as it descended rapidly. The circumstances leading to the emergency landing are currently under investigation. Further details regarding the condition of the hospitalized individuals have not been released at this time.
