Investigation Underway into Fatal Crash at 5400 West Sam Houston Parkway South Following Police Chase

HOUSTON, TX – A fatal crash that occurred on the 5400 West Sam Houston Parkway South service road around 2:35 a.m. on August 9 is under active investigation by the Houston Police Department (HPD). The incident followed a high-speed chase that began with an attempted traffic stop.

According to HPD, patrol officers attempted to stop a black Honda Pilot traveling northbound on the West Sam Houston Parkway service road on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The driver of the Pilot initially slowed down but then accelerated, evading police at a high rate of speed.

The suspect proceeded northbound on the West Sam Houston Parkway, took the Gessner Road exit, made a U-turn at Little York Road, and then headed southbound. Officers continued the pursuit as the Pilot entered the Sam Houston Parkway main lanes near Hammerly Boulevard.

The chase came to a tragic end when the suspect took the Bellaire exit at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle. The Pilot rolled over on the service road, ejecting a female passenger. Houston Fire Department paramedics were dispatched to the scene, where they pronounced the woman deceased. Her identity remains pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The male driver, 32, suffered critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Preliminary investigations indicate that he exhibited signs of impairment.
