Evading Theft Suspect’s Getaway Halted By Vehicle’s Mechanical Issues
HOUSTON, TX, August 18, 2023 – A theft suspect’s escape was abruptly halted due to mechanical issues with his vehicle, following an attempted theft at a home improvement store in Gulfgate Center Mall.
Sergeant Wright, Deputy Smejkal, and Deputy Garza responded to the theft call at approximately 1:07 p.m. They quickly located a vehicle matching the description given by dispatch and tried to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect, however, attempted to evade the deputies at a high rate of speed until his vehicle experienced mechanical problems and came to a complete stop.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, deputies discovered tools stolen from the home improvement store, totaling over $600 in value. The tools were promptly returned to the store, and the District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of Evading in a Motor Vehicle and Class B Theft. The suspect was subsequently transported to Harris County Jail for booking and processing.
