UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Shooting Leaves One Faculty Member Dead; Suspect in Custody

CHAPEL HILL, NC, August 28, 2023 – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community was shaken today when shots were fired at Caudill Laboratories on the campus. The incident took place at 1:02 p.m., and the suspect was apprehended by UNC Police at approximately 2:30 p.m. An “all clear” was issued at around 4:15 p.m., and there is no longer an immediate threat, according to authorities. UNC Police are collaborating with the Chapel Hill Police Department in the ongoing investigation.

Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz confirmed the tragic loss of a faculty member in the shooting. The university is withholding further information until the next of kin has been notified. “This shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted on our campus,” said Chancellor Guskiewicz in a letter to the university community.

As a response to the tragic event, classes and all campus activities have been canceled for the rest of the day on Monday, Aug. 28, and Tuesday, Aug. 29. The campus will operate under Condition 2 until midnight tomorrow.

Support services are available for those affected by the incident. Students, including graduate and professional students and postdocs, are encouraged to contact the Dean of Students team or Counseling and Psychological Services. Faculty and staff may reach out to the Employee Assistance Program for support.

Chancellor Guskiewicz expressed gratitude to the Emergency Operations Center and UNC Police for effectively managing the situation and thanked the faculty, staff, and students for their cooperation. “I am praying for the victim, their family, and every member of the Carolina community,” he stated.
