College of the Mainland Lifts Lockdown After Police Chase Armed Suspect Nearby
(TEXAS CITY, TX, Aug. 31, 2023) – College of the Mainland has lifted its “Threat Near By Lockdown” after Texas City police engaged in a foot chase with an armed suspect in close proximity to the campus. The incident began when police responded to reports of shots fired in the 8600 block of EF Lowry Expressway. Upon arrival, officers identified a man holding a firearm but found no evidence of anyone or any property being struck by gunfire.
The armed individual fled on foot in the direction of Shiloh Street, prompting the college to initiate a lockdown. The advisory instructed staff and students to shelter in place due to police action involving an armed person nearby. Texas City police clarified that there was no confirmation the armed man ever entered the college campus.
Members of Texas City’s tactical unit proceeded to search the buildings and grounds of the campus as a precautionary measure. Texas City Assistant Chief Landis Cravens stated there was no direct threat to the college campus.
